Stephen, a malnourished nine-week-old weighing only 3.7 pounds and suffering from severe dehydration, is cared for by a nurse from the NGO Watoto after the infant's mother passed away from complications at birth in Kampala, Uganda. Although maternal mortality rates have dropped by nearly half worldwide since 1990, according to the World Health Organization, over 800 mothers die every day from preventable causes related to childbirth - with over half of these deaths occurring in Sub-Saharan Africa.
