Late into the night, a lantern illuminates the water in Pomquet Harbour as Indigenous fisher Kerry Prosper stands at the bow of his canoe spearing eels near the Paqtnkek Mi'kmaw Nation in Nova Scotia, Canada on July 20, 2017.
Eel, known as Kat in the Mi'kmaq dialect, is prized by Prosperâs band, which has eaten and used it for materials, medicine, and spiritual offerings for millennia. Honouring the ancient fish's spirituality, Prosper uses a traditional fishing practice to feed his community and stay strongly connected with his Miâkmaq identity.
